Rabbit Shows
UK Rabbit Show Guide
Where to find them & what goes on
The governing body for the Rabbit Fancy in the UK is the British Rabbit Council which has a Show Diary but with very only very basic details. More detailed information on upcoming rabbit shows can be found in Fur & Feather Magazine or contact your local rabbit club. If you are in Scotland go direct to the Scottish Rabbit Clubs site. The British Rabbit Council also has local advisors who can give advice on any aspect of rabbit keeping. If you know any rabbit breeders, then they will also be available to advise you on where to find a rabbit show in many cases.
The London Championship Show which includes rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents is to be held in Reading on 3rd and 4th September 2006.
To enter into a rabbit show you have to contact the organising club's show secretary and request a schedule. Your rabbit will be booked in to enter the show once you've returned the schedule with the relevant entry fees for the classes you've chosen to enter. To enter in the pedigrees classes your rabbit must be rung. That is it must have a ring on its foot which has been allocated to the breeder by the British Rabbit Council. If your rabbit has not been rung, you can still enter in the pet class.
When you first arrive at a rabbit show you must go to the organisers and get your pen numbers. You should then settle your rabbit in it's pen with a water bottle, fresh hay and some food. Club stewards will come and get your rabbit when the judge asks them to. You must leave your rabbit in its pen while judging is taking place.
Rabbits are divided into breed classes, sex and age. Winners from these initial classes then go on to compete with one another for prizes in the joint classes. Rosettes and prize money are awarded to the winners and runners up.
If you are going to a show to chat to breeders, wait until they've penned their rabbits and finished final grooming but try to catch them before they start to watch the judging. Most shows have a canteen where you can buy refreshments but rabbit breeders are inclined to find their way to the nearest pub for lunch which means that lunchtime may or may not be a good time to catch them.
